Our Mission

Established in 2004, Athenry Community Playground is the first and only community playground in Athenry. The playground is not owned or managed by the Galway County Council. For over 20 years, this beloved playground has been a central gathering spot for both locals and tourists, providing a safe, welcoming space for families and visitors of all ages.

By 2024, the playground was in irreversible disrepair, and its condition and limited equipment were unfit for the needs of the growing community. Volunteers worked to secure funds via donations and grants to replace the equipment and by 2026, started the first phase of renovations to create a state-of-the-art, fully accessible and truly inclusive playground for children of all ages and abilities.

Athenry Community Playground Group received support from Galway County Council and Galway Rural Development to fund the playground’s renovation. Additional funding is needed for required match funding, essential repairs, ongoing maintenance, and new equipment.

The full fund will be used for:

Our vision includes:

The total investment will make a lasting impact and ensure a safer, more enjoyable community space. Athenry Community Playground is more than just a place for children to play—it's a vital Third Place that fosters mental well-being, inclusion, and social interaction for all ages. As the only public playground in Athenry, it serves as a cornerstone for community connection, helping to reduce isolation and enhance the quality of life for families and individuals alike.

Together, we can ensure that Athenry Community Playground continues to be a vibrant part of our town for generations to come.

The Athenry Community Playground Group (ACPG), run by dedicated parent volunteers, oversees the development and maintenance of the playground. Every donation directly funds improvements. Athenry Community Playground is not owned, managed, or funded by Galway County Council. We rely on the generosity of our community to keep this vital space thriving—whether through financial contributions, volunteer hours, or the donation of skills. Every contribution counts, and we welcome all offers of assistance.
