Our Mission
Established in 2004, Athenry Community Playground is the first and only community playground in Athenry. The playground is not owned or managed by the Galway County Council. For over 20 years, this beloved playground has been a central gathering spot for both locals and tourists, providing a safe, welcoming space for families and visitors of all ages.
The playground is now falling into a state of irreversible disrepair, and its current condition and limited equipment do not meet the needs of the growing community. We aim to create a state-of-the-art, fully accessible playground for children of all ages and abilities, and cater to children who have special needs in a truly inclusive way. To reach this goal, we must completely renovate the playground.
We are actively seeking support from Galway County Council to fund the playground’s renovation, something that will cost in the region of €250,000. We have applied for around €150,000 through various grants, but still need to raise an additional €100,000 for required match funding, essential repairs, ongoing maintenance, and new equipment.
The full fund will be used for:
- Immediate Repairs and Replacement: Addressing safety concerns on current equipment and urgently replacing missing equipment like the Senior Play Frame.
- Preventative Maintenance:Implementing measures to proactively tackle potential issues in the coming years and ensuring the longevity of the playground through inspections and ROSPA safety training for volunteers.
- Enhanced Play Value: Introducing options to enhance the overall play experience, making it more enjoyable for the children in our community and an attraction to visitors.
Our vision includes:
- Castle themed senior play frame
- Shelter and hangout space
- Sensory garden and quiet area
- Challenge course
- Imaginative and musical play elements
- Upgraded weatherproof equipment
The total investment will make a lasting impact and ensure a safer, more enjoyable community space. Athenry Community Playground is more than just a place for children to play—it's a vital Third Place that fosters mental well-being, inclusion, and social interaction for all ages. As the only public playground in Athenry, it serves as a cornerstone for community connection, helping to reduce isolation and enhance the quality of life for families and individuals alike.
Together, we can ensure that Athenry Community Playground continues to be a vibrant part of our town for generations to come.
The Athenry Community Playground Group (ACPG), run by dedicated parent volunteers, oversees the development and maintenance of the playground. Every donation directly funds improvements. Athenry Community Playground is not owned, managed, or funded by Galway County Council. We rely on the generosity of our community to keep this vital space thriving—whether through financial contributions, volunteer hours, or the donation of skills. Every contribution counts, and we welcome all offers of assistance.
